Tory hopefuls are becoming more nervous by the day as papers like the ‘Mail’ which normally support them are waking up to the truth. The recession seems to be bottoming out – but the aftermath of the utter catastrophe caused by bankers and financiers (the natural supporters of Toryism) will leave a new government with a real headache. This is what ‘Daily Mail’ columnist Peter Oborne (not to be confused with Tory Osborne about whom he was writing) wrote over the weekend, arguing that even if the Tories were to win the general election:
‘”The truth is that Osborne will be forced to implement swingeing cuts ……… I can reveal he has ordered the Treasury’s permanent secretary, Nick Machperson, to find savings of nearly 30 per cent in departmental budgets which would come into effect immediately if the Tories gain power.
Such cuts will be hard enough to achieve in normal circumstances. But they will be almost impossible if Tory spokesmen carry on deceiving groups in the public sector that they will escape the axe. After such reassurances, the Tories will face the charge of heartlessness and betrayal.”
Betrayal? Where have we heard that before in connection with Tories? Are they ever to be viewed other than as the ’Nasty Party’ ?
