We have only published a small selection so far. The fascinating thing about it is that there has not been one single response that applauds the defection. (No doubt the defector’s friends will try to encourage one soon, but they’ve had no luck so far!)

Whatever happened to defector Denis Knowles’ blog? It seems to have vanished.

Can there be any connection with the Wallasey Top Tory (Cllr Blakeley) having adopted a role for himself as his Party’s grammarian?

Whatever happened to defector Denis Knowles’ blog? It seems to have vanished.

Can there be any connection with the Wallasey Top Tory (Cllr Blakeley) having adopted a role for himself as his Party’s grammarian?

By the way why not take a look at Conservative numeracy as well? They have just pronounced their by-election win, in one of their safest seats, as a fantastic success.

But in a reduced poll their vote collapsed by 681 (Labour’s also dropped – by a mere 59). The Tory percentage of votes cast also fell – and even with a Left independent in the field Labour’s percentage rose by almost 3%. At a time when the Tories had conducted the most virulently aggressive campaign in their history it must have been a great disappointment for them to see their support withering so badly. No wonder they prefer to comment in well spun words rather than in actual numbers.

Labour’s Will Bain comfortably cruised to victory in the Glasgow North East by-election.

Despite fanciful predictions that the far-right British National Party would do well, it came in hopelessly last failing to even retain its deposit. It’s mere 1,013 votes seemed a disgrace. With only 1,075 votes the Tories were almost equally disgraced and only narrowly missed the wooden spoon.

In his victory speech, the Labour winner Mr Bain declared: “This is a great day for Labour. This by-election has been about many things but most of all it has been about jobs and the economy.
