John’s bridge safety campaign continues.
On 12th October we showed a picture of LABOUR’s Cllr John Salter at the newly raised fence over a motorway bridge near St Joseph’s. The safety fence was built following John’s presentation of a petition to Merseytravel, on behalf of residents.
Strange to say, an almost exactly similar picture was published in the press shortly after with a ‘defected’ Councillor standing in the same spot and claiming the credit!
‘Cheekie chappie?’
Meanwhile John is already busy continuing his campaign, on behalf of residents of all parts of our ward, as the letter below shows.
Let’s hope Merseytravel will be able to make similar safety improvements on all of the other bridges.
We will keep you informed.
Protecting our environment
There has been a great clean up operation in Percy Road. Cllr John Salter is seen here with the Team. One delighted resident told John:
"We are really pleased about this clean up operation. There are still one or two blackspots but we all hope this initiative will be encouraging to everybody."
Several other residents commented favourably on the excellent work being done with young people in particular to deal with anti-social behaviour.
The Team removed just about everything they could, including some very small items as well as the obvious things. Many residents made a point of coming over to say a big ‘thank you’ to the team for their work.
Meanwhile, a lady walking her dog drew John’s attention to a couple of sources of smelly water, one of which seemed to have an oily substance in it. (See small photographs.)

John reported these to our Environmental Health Officers.
Do let us know if you spot any other sources of possible environmental concerns.
Tory ‘August is October’ epistles: confusion deepens!
Defector Knowles has never won a single Tory vote, but joined the Tory Party on the back of his loyal Labour voters without giving them the democratic option to confirm or reject him in a by-election. Meanwhile, he seems to be learning fast from his new Tory chums; they’ve always been strong on propaganda. What about action? …. hhmmmm!
In their August leaflet, delivered in October, (or was it their October leaflet but they thought they were still in August?) he and his Leahder tell how they had both been in touch with ‘the Council and Mersey Tunnels’ about the new, higher, fencing on the bridge over the Tunnel approach. Have they? If so it would be nice if they were to describe exactly what it involved. Denis used to have sharp words to say about their habit of hinting at an association with any good news - before he jumped ship. (We’ll quote some of his best ones in a future publication.)
But we are curious about why they had ‘…been in touch…’ with those organisations. Can it be that when they chanced along one day, perhaps trying to learn their way around, they noticed the new higher fencing was there and got ‘in touch’ to express their sincere appreciation of the councillor who assisted the petitioners in pressing for it to be put up?
And who was that councillor?
Err … it was Labour’s Cllr John Salter.
John is seen here – having a good laugh. He said:
‘You’ve got to admire their sheer brass neck haven’t you? I don’t recall them doing a stroke towards the petition!’
Putting that to one side, our readers may be interested in a little more information about how the improvement actually came about; it’s not a happy story.
Over the years there were several potentially very serious incidents, including things being thrown from the bridge at traffic below, and youngsters climbing dangerously on it. Although potentially dangerous these were entirely eclipsed when, about two years ago, there was a very tragic incident indeed – one that might never have happened had higher fencing been in place. That brought it all to a head and a residents’ spokesperson phoned John about it, asking him for advice in discovering who held responsibility for the fencing and for help in improving its security. John made enquiries and discovered it was Merseytravel. Many other agencies also became involved, including the Tunnel Police, ASBO Team, Youth Engagement – and of course the mobile police station which was then in the locality. John asked not only for the fencing to be raised but also for a general clean up of the Tunnel Approach Road, which was also done. John has a file of the work he put into this, culminating in the residents’ petition which he then presented.
Always at your service – Cllrs John Salter and Adrian Jones.
