Allandale support at Five Bars Rest

Landlord Tommy Jones paid a great tribute to the Labour Councillors for the work they have done to support the Youth Club over many years – and called on everybody present to make sure Adrian is supported in the May elections.



Just after Tommy and Phil O’Rourke had performed a brilliant duo with a mixture of folk songs and also some powerful ‘Songs of the Labour Movement’ Adrian took the microphone to thank him and his staff on behalf of the Allandale. Adrian said:



‘If only we had more community spirited people like Tommy the Allandale need never feel the pinch again. Wherever there is voluntary work to be done Tommy is likely to be there. When I called into the Wirral Ark Project for the homeless, when I was Mayor, who did I meet there? Tommy! When our pensioners at the Seacombe Community Centre Lunch Club were stranded in the January blizzard who took them in and gave them tea and coffee for several h0urs until they could be rescued? Tommy! When I mentioned to him that I was looking after the Lifeboat charity boxes, who said ‘Put one on my bar’? Tommy! And when I said I had asked some local businesses to put on fund raisers for the Allandale who said ‘Count me in’? Tommy!’



Adrian called for a round of applause – and the roof nearly came off. So from all of us in Seacombe Labour ‘Thank you Tommy for what you are doing not just for the Allandale but also for so many other good causes.’

The great thing about Tommy is that most people could never know how much voluntary and charity work he does. He was slightly embarrased to be thanked so warmly – but he greatly deserves the credit that is due to him.

Seacombe – and beyond.

24th March 2010 – later in the day.

Adrian regularly takes his Welsh Collie and English Springer (no bias there!) to Vale Park.

foot of Magazine Lane, he went down to take some photographs. The damage was pretty awful!

To add insult to injury the floor of the shelter had been made a lavatory for quite a number of dogs. What sort of people are they who don’t have the decency to clean up after their pets? (There is a bin within a few yards.)

Inside the shelter rows of lower tiles have been kicked off the wall and others have been damaged. It seems that some mindless louts are having ‘lotsa fun’. Some of the vandalism is seen here.

But what pleasure did this give even the thickest louts?

24th March 2010 – morning and lunchtime

John and Adrian attended the Seacombe Partnership meeting this morning, in St Luke’s Church . Then off to attend to a casework matter.

After that, lunch in the Seacombe Community Centre’s excellent luncheon club.

: Arriving at Seacombe Community Centre for the Luncheon Club. So where’s Adrian? Well, somebody had to take the photo.

John is now the Council’s Official representative to the Community Centre. Irrespective of how another councillor may have regarded the role John intends to provide full and meaningful support to the Management Committee.

: After a good lunch (at a very low price indeed) what better than to relax with a nice cup of tea.

He is presently seeking a progress report following the meeting on 22nd January with Adrian and Council Officers.

What is ’support’? Some might say there’s the sort of support a rope gives to a hanged man.

The Tories’ new lad, Denis Knowles, did himself no favours today when he made some rather sweeping comments about what wonders he intends to perform for the Seacombe Community Centre.

But when it was pointed out that he was supposed to be the Council’s representative on its managing body for many years – but (as far as we can tell) never turned up to support it at a meeting – he had no answer and sat on his hands looking rather sheepish. He was certainly uncharacteristically lost for words.

But we are always willing to accept if we are wrong. If Denis did provide support by attending those meetings he has only to tell us the dates and we will publish them for him with a full retraction of our doubts. It will have to be a good story though; when John and Adrian attended the Centre recently they were told by a long time regular there ‘Well I’ve been coming here for 18 years and I never saw him’.

So come on Denis, here’s an offer you can’t refuse. If you were marked ‘present’ on the register just send us your attendance record – we’ll publish it on this website for you!
